The silver coating is meant to reflect heat back to your body, increasing warmth and insulation from the cold ground. If sleeping on it alone, use silver side up. If layering underneath an inflatable sleeping pad for additional protection, the reflective coating is less pertinent, though some say to place it silver side down to reflect the cold air back to the ground.
