Kahtoola offers different size ranges for shoes vs boots due to the differing volumes between footwear. If your shoe and boot size both fall into the same size range, you could get away with a single pair. However, if you shoe and boot sizes are in different size ranges, you will need a different pair of Micro-spikes for each style of footwear. For example, a Men's size 9 falls within the Medium size range for shoes (8-11) and boots (7-9), however a Men's size 10 would require a Medium for shoes (8-11) and Large for boots (9-11).
